How can I make an informed decision on which food packaging and containers to use, in line with the City of Montreal and the Government of Canada regulations?
GUTA offers you this online tool that tells you what to ban, favor and encourage when placing orders with your suppliers. It was prepared in collaboration with the City of Montreal and La vague, an organization specializing in eco-responsible solutions for the restaurant sector in Quebec.
How does the tool work?
Click on one of the six categories of single-use items. Each one will show you which items are prohibited and which are authorized, provide disposable options that align with the regulatory criteria and suggest products and their suppliers. Of course, reusing is even better—this is why we’ve created a guide to help you better understand how to prioritize the use of reusable dishware and containers. We’ve taken it one step further by creating a checklist that covers everything you can do in your business to cut down on waste from the start.
As we know, recycling and composting aren’t miracle solutions! Instead, consider changing how you do take-out, educating your customers, and informing and guiding them towards better practices. We are all actors for change―communities, companies, the general population—and you, as business owners and as key participants in helping to change your customers’ habits by encouraging best practices. Our relationship to single-use plastic containers must change. The sum of our actions will help Montreal reach its goal of being a zero-waste city by 2030.
Let’s work together to change our food systems!
